BRADEN PARKER,

IF TODAY WAS YOUR LAST DAY
AND TOMORROW WAS TOO LATE
COULD YOU SAY GOODBYE TO YESTERDAY?

WOULD YOU LIVE EACH MOMENT LIKE YOUR LAST?
LEAVE OLD PICTURES IN THE PAST?

DONATE EVERY DIME YOU HAVE?

His breathing was laboured and the sweat in his eyes was beginning the sting, but it was worth it. There was nothing like a good run in the morning. Normally Braden would only do one run in the morning, which he already did in the park by his house, but he felt overly tense and anxious today. It wasn’t a common occurrence for him, but after everything that had happened two days ago with meeting Kaylin he had been restless non-stop. So he decided to do the only thing he knew he could do to help unwind and that was to go for a run.

Thankfully the man had no appointments this morning and was free to run off some nerves. And if he was needed, it wasn’t like he had to go far to make it back to his office. Unfortunately for the doctor, the running didn’t seem to be working much. Even as he used his shirt to wipe the sweat from his brow, all he could think of was his kiss with the dark-haired beauty. Even though it was easy to see at this point that he was being manipulated by her powers, it was still difficult to get her out of his head. Powers or not, the woman was gorgeous. And one hell of a kisser too. It was all hard to forget; a memory like that.

Rounding a corner, Bray started to make his way back toward the academy through the stables. Slowing as he approached, the shirtless counsellor used his shirt once more to wipe away the sweat from his face and neck. As he moved his shirt away from his face, the first thing that had hit him was the smell. It was strong and abrupt, but it was one that Braden actually enjoyed. He may have been a city boy, but there was something about horses that he had come to thoroughly enjoy since working at the academy.

Taking in some deep breaths, he stopped at one of the stalls. This stall in particular was home to a brown and white Appaloosa named Tobey. He was a beautiful horse and Braden was quite fond of the friendly creature. As he talked aimlessly to the majestic creature, Braden began to stretch out his muscles from the run. If only he had been paying more attention to his surroundings.

notes: Most awkward woman ever
She was a coward, a complete and utter spineless coward. Knowing this fact, however, didn't change it much to her displeasure. For the past two days Kaylin had been going out of her way to avoid the hallway where she had run into Braden, walking anyway she could find that would take her around it or finding any excuse to not have to go near his office. She was still mortified at what she had done, it had been making her control shaky but it had also inspired a new level of determination in her, 48 hours prior. Hell, she had even gone so far as to bring papers that needed grading to the stables just to be sure she wouldn't be out in the open area of campus. She wasn't sure what would happen if she saw him again but she was pretty sure whatever she did would just dig her own grave that much deeper or she'd learn a whole new level of embarrassment than any human had discovered before.

She had a good reason for being at the stables, however, considering she boarded a horse there for the past couple years. Granted she hadn't been able to spend much time with Tobey before she had gotten the job at Silas, which is why she made sure the stable master knew that anyone was allowed to ride him to give him the exercise he would need. It was either that or let her parents sell him when they moved and that was just not something Kaylin could let happen. So when she had found out that the place she had been taking specialty night classes at had a stables and students were allowed to bring their horses...well, she made sure Tobey got a place to stay. She felt kind of bad that she hadn't gotten to spend as much time with him as she used to but she was glad he at least remembered her when she did get to stop by. The horse also made the perfect escape in her cowardice.

Since she hadn't been able to think well since The Kiss (yes, the caps were necessary) she hadn't even graded the papers she had accidently tossed around that night. She had also resorted to educational movies for her classes since she was already frazzled and the kids seemed to appreciate it; not to mention her one trouble student who always managed to make her blush didn't help and putting a movie on was easier to ignore him than not. Anyway, she had hidden out in the stables, pulled a stool into Tobey's stall to sit with him as he munched on some oats and hay and tried to do some work. She didn't even have her ipod with her as she preferred the sounds of the horses to music and it was oddly comforting being surrounded by the familiar smell of the beasts and Tobey's occasional snort between chewing. At least it had been until she heard his voice.

She she could have melted into the wall she would have. Hell, becoming the wall would have been great but she had to settle for pressing her back as far into the wood as she could and squeezing her eyes shut while mentally hoping he wouldn't notice her. Hell, all he would have to do was come closer to the stall, reach out to maybe pet Tobey's nose as the horse stuck his head out from it at the sound of Braden's voice, and he'd see her. She was hoping he'd leave soon but apparently Tobey wasn't going to let her sit and pretend to be a shadow no matter how badly she wanted to be. Apparently he wanted out, to greet his visitor, and he told her as much by dropping his head down to nudge her, knocking her almost off the stool.

"Ack!" She had to fling her arms out to keep herself upright, two solid thunks against the wood. She froze, eyes going wide and prayed that her small, startled, sound had gone unheard. Knowing her luck she was going to guess that wasn't the case but a girl could hope.

It would have been an absolute bold faced lie if Braden had said that Kay’s loud and sudden exclamation hadn’t scared the hell out of him. As she had yelled out, the academy’s counsellor visibly jumped into the air and muttered a couple choice swear words to go along with it. Placing a hand over his chest, he felt like his heart was going to beat right out of his rather sweaty chest.

Stepping back away from the stall, he peered in past the neighing horse and felt the hair on the back of his neck stand on end. Of all the people for him to run into, it would be Kaylin. For them to run into each other in such a manner in such a location was something that Braden felt went beyond coincidence. Something like this was more like kismet. Like fate. And while he liked to think that people made their own fate and their own destiny, it was things like this that made him question if there really was a higher power in the universe.

“Are...are you okay in there?” He inquired.

Stepping forward, he placed his hand over Tobey’s head and rubbed up between his eyes to his mane. The beast, happy with the attention, moved to the side so that Braden and Kay would have a better view of each other. And once his eyes laid upon the teacher, he felt his cheeks flush. All that Braden could think of in that moment was their kiss. And though he was under the influence of her powers, he still recalled it fondly.

“I’m sorry about that Kay...I mean Miss Cypher. Tobey can get a bit excited at times.”

By God in Heaven did he ever want to kiss her again.

notes: Most awkward woman ever
She almost groaned out loud when he asked her if she was alright. Clearly she had been way louder than she thought, thank you so very much Tobey, and he was just nice enough to make sure the thudding wasn't her cracking her head open. Ugh, did he have to be so nice? Tilting her head back to look up at him as he peered down into the stall she gave him a small smile. "I'm fine," she breathed, wishing he was at least a little less pretty. "Despite Tobey's attempt to knock me over," she added with an awkward little laugh. She could only see a little bit of Braden through Tobey and what she could see was sort of upside down given how she was looking at him and while part of her wanted Tobey to move the other part would rather he didn't; the horse's body would make for a good curtain if she ended up blushing as much as she had last time.

Alas the moment the horse got what he wanted, Braden's attention, he shifted to be closer to the male human and that allowed her to actually look at him. Holy crap, was he shirtless? She was pretty sure she was staring at him, a little wide eyed, even though she couldn't see all of his chest from where she was sitting. She was also getting a crick in her neck. Shifting she took advantage of the extra room Tobey had given her and turned so she could actually look at him like a normal human. Of course as she did so she triple checked to make sure the switch in her brain was locked and chained in the off position. She didn't think she could live through another episode of utter mortification.

"You can call me Kay," she blurted before grabbing on to the offered distraction of Tobey. "He was worse as a pony," she informed with a soft laugh before setting her papers aside, more like shoving them into the bag she had by the stool, and then pushing to her feet which, of course, allowed her to actually see him. Oh...oh crap...he was shirtless. Another check of her switch had to be done because the moment she noticed all that glistening muscle something felt like it fried but a quick moment of panic about her ability gave her enough brain power to make sure she wouldn't overwhelm him as she had done before. She still felt bad for what had happened even if she hadn't meant to do it but how did one apologize for messing with another's emotions and then running away like a coward and not making sure he was alright afterwards? Sure, she knew her power would wear off eventually but still, she had avoided him like she was the plague and didn't want to infect him any more than she probably already had.

"So, um, you like horses?" Oh my god, that was a stupid question. If he didn't he wouldn't be in the stables, being all buddy buddy with Tobey now would he? She was really starting to think living under a rock would be better for her.

Braden was glad to see that she was okay. It wasn’t likely that she would have been overly hurt over what had happened anyway, but horses were powerful creatures and one could never be too sure. Still, the fact she was okay was more than a relief to him.

“You sure? I figured after what happened the other day you’d probably want to keep things more...well, professional,” he replied.

Her comment about Tobey being a pony made the man raise an eyebrow in curiosity. When Tobey had arrived to the school he was already an adult and fully trained. There was no way for her to have known what he was like as a foal unless she was there. And then that was when it hit him. Tobey was her horse. Of all of the horses that he could have bonded with in the stables, it just had to be Kay’s. It couldn’t be one that belonged to someone else like a student. No, it had to be Kay’s. Just is luck.

“And yeah, I do like horses. Tobey is a good one. Little excitable at times, but a good one,” Braden answered, glad to a change in the subject.

notes: <.< >.>

Oh lord, he had to go and mention The Incident. She was trying very, very, very, hard not to think about it because if she thought about it she would think about how it ended. Not her running away like a fool but...the feel of his mouth on hers, the way the kiss made her feel and how she forgot for a moment that it was her power making him kiss her and not that he actually wanted to. That right there was a sobering thought and helped her reign in the scattered throughs his reminding her had blown to the wind.

"I'm sorry," she squeaked, rubbing the back of her flushed neck with a hand. Of course he might want to keep that kind of barrier between them after what she had done but then she ran over what he had said again and he seemed more worried about her wanting that than him. She could feel her cheeks heat a bit more at that and she shook her head and managed to force a small, awkward little, smile on her face. "I'm sure. I mean, unless you would prefer to keep things that way, though honestly it's weird for me to have any adult call me Ms. Cypher not since that's what all my student call me and you're so totally not a student and-" she cut herself off again and bit her lower lip, rather hard, in an attempt to shut herself up. Why couldn't her mouth have an off switch like her power did, even if it was a faulty one?

Instead of doing what she normally would, and what would have sent her off into another ramble-rant, she latched on to the distraction Tobey provided and was grateful for it. If she could just keep this up she might actually be able to hold a conversation with him and not slip up powerwise at least. She couldn't promise the same for her mouth, it always got her in some sort of trouble whenever she felt nervous and BRaden definitely made her nervous - in a good way...she thinks.

Draping her arm over Tobey's shoulders, her fingers scratching lightly at his coat on the opposite side, she smiled - a real one, one she didn't have to think about - formed on her face as she looked from man to horse. "Yeah he is, I just feel bad I haven't gotten to ride him much lately. I didn't realize how much work it would be to teach and still be a student. It's kind of exhausting." Especially when one pushed themselves as hard as Kaylin did when it came to training but she wasn't going to quit any time soon just because it was hard, having to avoid people - while it may be easier - would be harder. Just because she always put her foot in her mouth didn't make her any less of a people person. Besides, if she became a hermit she would get to stare at Braden all sweaty and without a shirt on like she found herself doing again. This did so not bode well for keeping her power in check but damn was he pretty.
