Someone once asked me, "Why do you insist on always taking the hard road." I replied, "Why do you assume I see two roads?"

Just a man and his will to survive
Bones crunched as fist met jaw, and Erik threw the man atop him off before rolling over and pushing to his feet, already set into a sprint. His metallic skin caught the rays of the harsh desert sun and reflected openly, making him into an easier target, but he couldn't afford to drop the protective shell, not with bullets flying. He had to get to Rini and get them out of here, but they were outnumbered and outgunned. He'd already run out of bullets forever ago, and Rini was currently holed up in the shack they'd been held captive in. He'd sneaked out, hoping to acquire one of the cars and get them out without having to engage in an on-foot battle royale. If current conditions were any indication, the plan had failed miserably.

Bullets peppered him from behind, and he was immensely grateful that the car he'd assimilated had been bulletproof. He ducked behind one of the cars surrounding the hut, dodging another array of bullets. He had to get to Rini... but he didn't know exactly how. Even he couldn't handle ten armed men on his own. Not all at once, anyway.

Furiously, Serinity wiped away the stray tear that had slid down her cheek. Her hands trembled as she fiddled with the pillow case that had been previously over her head. Captive. She and Erik had been held hostage. Their mission had been so simple. Travel to Vegas, yay! Get some info, bearable. Be back in time for dinner, arg! The minute they entered that shady casino, Rini knew something was off. Minutes later she and her boyfriend were being taken out to the middle of nowhere, bound and gagged. How Erik managed to escape his restrains were beyond her. Perhaps he just had many skills.

"Erik!” she screamed finally seeing him in all his shiny glory. Thankfully he managed to assimilate to a nearby car for protection. Still, it wouldn’t be enough to get them out of this mess. "Oh my god,” she whined covering her mouth as several bullets pinged off Erik. So far he seemed ok. How long could he keep this up, though?

Shaking with adrenaline and fear, Rini looked around for something in the little shack that could help them. Nothing. There was literally nothing except for a couple of old plastic bottles, a bucket, and the pillow case. "Come on, come on,” she growled balling her fists trying to push through the fear. There had to be something she could… oh.

The wind kicked up and dust swirled around the immediate area. Thunder rumbled in the far distance heading toward their position quickly. Flinging the door of the shack open, Serinity ran out into the fray. A bullet whizzed beside her eliciting a shout. Covering her mouth the weather manipulator stilled herself as best she could given the circumstance. Rain fell in a sudden sheet of white. Within moments everything was drenched. "Get inside Erik! Get inside!” Hopefully the metal man could figure out which way to go in this mess.

Just a man and his will to survive
There had to be something he could do! In pure frustration, he punched the side of the car he was hiding behind. The metal caved in where his fist hit. He knew, of course, that his girlfriend was a weather manipulator. She could command the skies on a whime, but logically he thought it impossible for her to do much with the weather out here in the desert. He clearly underestimated her, especially when the clouds began to roll in. He stared up at the sky in surprise, eyes wide. It all happened so quickly; it seemed impossible. He knew that her power came at a price. Although now, here, a nasty storm was suddenly rolling in, he understood that somewhere else in the world could suffer because of it. Playing with nature always had it's consequences.

Rain rushed in, drenching the area in a matter of seconds. It was probably the most rain this part of the desert had seen in a long time. Taking advantage of the men's stunned stillness, Erik peeked over the car in time to see a blonde head darting out of the shack's front door. His heart clenched in his chest. WHAT DID SHE THINK SHE WAS DOING?! He stood in alarm without realizing he'd done so. She was screaming at him, but he couldn't catch what she was saying with the thunder and roar of the rain. But her gesturing filled in the gaps. He waved furiously at her. "GET BACK INSIDE!" She wasn't bulletproof like he was.

The men returned to their senses because bullets began flying again. Erik lost sight of Rini when he had to dodge the new fray. He prayed she'd run back inside. Lightning struck the ground not far away, and a new sense of urgency went through him. Was she planning to electrocute all of them? His heart rate spiked. He'd dealt with electricity before when he'd killed the man who had murdered his sister. He knew that being a creature of metal was like being a mobile lightning pole. Deciding taking his chances not being bulletproof enough were better than getting a lightning bolt to his face, Erik sprinted out from behind the car straight for the shack.

He was almost to the door when his foot caught in mud and he fell on his face, eating plenty of the wet earth to last him a lifetime. More lightning bolts zipped down around him. Men screamed and the shooting ceased. He picked up his head in time to see Rini's beautiful face marred by horror before everything went white hot...

And then black.

So. The storm was a lot stronger than Serinity had intended. Apparently she had used just a little too much energy when calling in the appropriate conditions to create a storm. Regardless, she was strong. Rini could handle this. Or at least, she kept telling herself that. A bullet whizzed past her ear far too close for comfort. Instead of screaming like a child and running into the safety of the shack, the weather manipulator steeled herself and breathed in and out slowly. Aka, she did the stupidest thing imaginable.

Erik couldn’t deal with these thugs alone. It was time she picked up the lack and helped out. Seeing Erik on his way to safety, Serinity closed her eyes and felt out with her ability to find the men’s heat signatures. It was one of the weakest parts of her power, but something she could do none the less. With a vague idea of their enemy, Rini scrunched up her face with concentration. A bolt of lightning struck down near the group. All she needed was one good bolt with a proper sense of direction. Taking in a deep breath, Serinity let it out in a rush. The air around changed. A pathway of positively charged air was created between the men in preparation. The clouds above suddenly flared white illuminating the darkened desert as a vein of lightning crashed toward them and streaked outward.

The lightning followed the positively charged pathways that encompassed the men surrounding them. Some took a direct hit of electricity. The others were only close enough to temporarily blind or disorient. Lightning up with pride over her accomplishment, Rini looked around to find Erik. Movement in the mud before her caught her attention. Seconds later a scowl darkened her features only to fall into full blown horror as another bolt of lightning struck the metallic car some distance away. Unable to react fast enough, Serinity could only watch as the electricity trailed off of the metal car following Erik’s trail toward the cabin. Not exactly a science wiz, Serinity knew enough to know that a metal Erik plus an electrical charge (i.e. lightning) was not a good thing…

Just a man and his will to survive
Pain.

The first sensation Erik felt through the darkness was pain. A splitting headache resounded through his skull, playing hooky with his senses. He tasted copper and metal. He felt cold and wet while simultaneously warm. As for smell, he couldn't smell anything, and the high-pitched ringing in his ears made it impossible for him to hear anything, either. Yet the worst aspect of everything uncomfortable he was experiencing was the lack of fluid, involved thought. Even upon normal waking, the mind churned out thoughts, memories, assumptions... stuff. Anything. Currently, his mind was a blank. He could barely remember his name. It had to be due to the headache, for logic dictated that such a thing was not normal and the mind reached for any explanation that wasn't permanent damage.

It had to be.

Eyes fluttering open, Erik had a difficult time registering his surroundings; the flashing color spots in his vision only making it harder. His stomach quickly became upset, and, on top of everything, he had to try and keep the contents of his stomach down. Groaning, he closed his eyes again. Having them open only made things worse. He had no idea what was going on, why he felt so poor, where he was. Nothing. He tried to remember... but nothing.
